California's Master Plan for Aging: What Does Health Have to Do With Housing?
Hosted by the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate’s Housing as Health Care Initiative and Levine Program in Housing and Social Responsibility.

In June 2019, Governor Gavin Newson issued an Executive Order calling for the development of Master Plan for Aging for California, and in January 2021, the Master Plan was released. The Plan set forth five bold goals: 1) Housing for All Ages and Stages, 2) Health Reimagined, 3) Inclusion and Equity, not Isolation, 4) Caregiving that Works, and 5) Affording Aging. This symposium will address how the complex networks of housing and health can be integrated to work in concert and ensure that the rapidly growing aging population of senior Californians could age in place with access to a rich network of community supports and services when needed.

This symposium aims to continue the housing as health care conversation following an engaging panel hosted by SCANPH in March, where panelists discussed how residents in senior housing can fall through the cracks despite the many fantastic programs that are available, but can be limited by income, location, time, and/or health need.

Kim McCoy Wade (California Department of Aging) will deliver the opening keynote. Director McCoy Wade led the task force of stakeholders who developed the MPA. Meghan Rose (LeadingAge CA) will then moderate a robust discussion, set within the MPA’s framework of action, that will address housing and health policy opportunities (Sarah Steenhausen of The SCAN Foundation) as well as share experiences and perspectives from current housing and health programs (Doug Shoemaker of Mercy Housing California and Christina Cerrato of Episcopal Communities & Services’ HUD Integrated Wellness in Supportive Housing (iWISH) sites) in the senior nonprofit affordable housing environment. We hope you can join us.
