She holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of California, San Diego. McArthur served as a Mission Specialist aboard STS-125, the final space shuttle mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The successful mission improved the telescope’s capabilities and extended its life – it is still in operation today. In completing her first space mission, McArthur has logged almost 13 days in space. She most recently served as pilot of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, named Endeavour, and NASA’s SpaceX Crew-2 mission which landed November 8, 2021. Jayathi Murthy, Ph.D. (Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean @UCLA Samueli School of Engineering) Jayathi Y. Murthy is the Ronald and Valerie Sugar Dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. She is the first female dean in the school’s 75-year history. In 2020, she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, among the highest professional honors granted to an American engineer. As dean, she has prioritized expanding access to a UCLA engineering education by recruiting underrepresented minority students and faculty, and establishing WE@UCLA to encourage women in engineering. Murthy’s recent research has addressed sub-micron thermal transport, multiscale multi-physics simulations of MEMS and NEMS, and uncertainty quantification in these systems. Before coming to UCLA, Murthy was chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and held the Ernest Cockrell Jr. Memorial Chair in Engineering.
